Dioklecian Palace Split

One of the most fascinating blends of ancient history and modern life in Europe

Split – The Heart of the Dalmatian Coast

Split is Croatia’s second-largest city, located right on the Adriatic Sea. It’s a vibrant mix of Roman ruins, Mediterranean charm, bustling markets, beaches, and nightlife—all packed around the Diocletian’s Palace, which is literally the city’s living, beating core.

🏛️ Diocletian’s Palace – A Roman Emperor’s Retirement Home Turned City Center

What is it?

  • A massive Roman palace-fortress built around 305 AD by Emperor Diocletian, who actually retired there (rare for Roman emperors!)

  • Today, it’s not just a “ruin” – it’s a living neighborhood full of apartments, shops, cafes, and bars

  • A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979

Why is it so special?

  • It’s one of the best-preserved Roman structures in the world

  • Instead of being abandoned or just preserved as a museum, it’s been continuously inhabited for over 1,700 years

  • You’ll literally walk on Roman streets, sip coffee in a square that was once a Roman peristyle (courtyard), and maybe stay in a guesthouse built into ancient walls

What to See Inside the Palace:

Peristyle Square

  • The central courtyard with Roman columns and steps—great for photos, music performances, and just soaking up the vibe.

Cathedral of St. Domnius

  • Former mausoleum of Diocletian, now a Christian cathedral

  • Climb the bell tower for epic views over Split and the sea

The Substructures (Basement Halls)

  • Massive vaulted rooms beneath the palace

  • Used as a market today—and featured in Game of Thrones (Daenerys’ dragon lair!)

Golden, Silver, Iron, and Bronze Gates

  • Original palace gates—still standing and used as city entrances

Narrow alleys and hidden corners

  • Full of artisan shops, wine bars, and cozy restaurants tucked into stone walls

🎥 Fun Fact:

  • Game of Thrones filmed many scenes here (especially in the basement areas and palace courtyards)

  • You can take themed tours if you’re a fan!

  • Bacvice Beach: A sandy city beach known for playing picigin, a local ball game in shallow water

  • Ferries to Islands: Split is the jumping-off point for islands like Hvar, Brač, and Vis
